Lauren Burns is a digital creator based between Sydney and the Central Coast, known for her refined, minimal aesthetic and beautifully composed visual storytelling. Lauren recently took our PF25 collection to Japan, capturing it through her signature lens while immersing herself in the rich culture, considered design, and quiet elegance of each place she explored.

We caught up with Lauren post-travels to hear more about her favourite finds in Japan, what’s inspiring her right now, and how she curates her wardrobe on the go.

Your trip to Japan looked incredible, what were some of your favourite places to visit - hidden gems, must-see spots, cafés/restaurants you'd return to in a heartbeat?

There was an amazing gyozo spot that we stumbled across in Kyoto called Gyozo Dokoro Takayuki SUKEMASA - the menu was tiny but it was so affordable and delicious.

I’d go back to Kyoto in a heartbeat to explore more of their cafe culture and tea houses - we spent the least amount of time there, but it had a really beautiful mix of history and culture that the cities lack.

I think Teien Art Museum in Tokyo is something you absolutely can’t miss too. It’s only small but so beautiful. And Ueno Zoo to see the pandas!

Did Japan surprise you in any way? Any moments that really stuck with you from the trip?

It did surprise me how they manage to stay so clean and efficient as a society with a huge population. Everyone is also beyond polite, the people are beautiful.

When you travel, how do you curate your wardrobe - do you plan looks around the destination, or do you pack intuitively?

I typically plan looks around the destination/weather. I still pack intuitively using my existing wardrobe, but I like to only pack pieces that can be mixed and matched with each other so I can create the most amount of outfits with as few pieces as possible - it’s very important to leave space in your luggage for shopping!

Do you have your eye on any pieces from our PF25 drop? We'd love to know what you're loving!

Yes - obviously!! I fell in love with the silhouette of the Margot Knit, Joel Blazer & Ralph Shirt. Such timeless styles with really beautiful fabrications.

Who are the women (or creators) inspiring you right now - whether in style, creativity, or life in general?

I’m always inspired by Elly McGaw, and seek out creative inspiration from my library of fashion photography books and magazines - they’re the best when you find yourself in a creative rut.

Lauren’s Japan Shortlist

Favourite restaurants/bars/cafés:

Our favourite bar was definitely Record Bar Analog in Shibuya - they serve the most delicious truffle crisps with your drinks, and it’s filled with records that you get to flick through and play. It’s intimate and very fun.

All of the food markets are elite but our favourite restaurant was Hakushu Teppanyaki, also in Shibuya. The most delicious, melt in your mouth Wagyu - and if you’re lucky enough, the owners beautiful elderly mother will be in the kitchen. She was divine.

Best spots for shopping or vintage finds:

My favourite spot that we visited and had the most success was Togoshi ginza shopping street - there’s a great 2nd Street store there, and some little vintage shops where I picked up some beautiful frames and artwork.

Design destinations or interiors inspiration:

Teien Art Museum is a MUST if you’re interested in design/interiors. It is probably my second favourite museum in the world.

I also really loved a lot of the Buddhist temples in Kyoto - they’re so quiet, have spectacular gardens and are a perfect place to reflect and relax away from the crowds. Some of my favourites are: Tofukuji Funda-in (Sesshu-ji), Genko-an, Tenjuan and Kenninji.

Art galleries or cultural must-visits:

Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo - MOT, Suntory Museum of Art (Tokyo), The National Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto), Kinkakuji (golden temple, Kyoto), Nijo castle (Kyoto)
